Gumnam Shayar

Jaun Elia the name might direct our thoughts somewhere around  a lady with European or English name. But differently Syed Hussain Sibt-e-Asghar Naqvi commonly known as Jaun Elia جون ایلیا (14 December 1931 – 8 November 2002) was a famous male poet, philosopher, translator, scholar, biographer who was born in India in Amroha and after partition of India he moved to Pakistan. His father, Shafiq Elia, was a scholar of literature and astronomy well-versed in the Arabic, English, Persian, Hebrew and Sanskrit languages. He was initially educated at the Syed-ul-Madaris in Amroha and was identified as a child prodigy.

He was very expressive and used to look for new subjects for writing. He was always found to support and stand for truth. He began writing poetry at the age of 8 but published his first collection, Shayad, when he was 60. He was inspired by the philosophy of Islam. He is known to be great follower of communism at his time.

Kuch nahin toh ik baddua bhejo.
कुछ तोह रिश्ता है तुमसे कम्बख्तों,

Nayi kaliyaan jo ab khili hain wahan,
Unki khushbu toh ik zara bhejo.
नई कलियाँ जो अब खिली हैं वहां,
उनकी खुशबु तोह इक ज़रा भेजो.
The new buds that have now blossomed there,
send a little of their fragrance.

Meri keemat ghatayi ja rahi hai,
Mujhe furqat sikhayi ja rahi hai.
Wo shay jo sirf hindustan ki thi,
Pakistan laayi jaa rahi hai.
मेरी कीमत घटाई जा रही है,
मुझे फुरक़त सिखाई जा रही है.
वो शय जो सिर्फ हिंदुस्तान की थी,
पाकिस्तान लायी जा रही है.
My value is being reduced,
I am being taught leisure.
The shay which belonged only to India,
is being brought to Pakistan.

Iss samandar mein tashneqaam hun main,
Baan tum ab bhi beh rahi ho kya.
इस समंदर में तश्नेकाम हूँ मैं,
बाण तुम अब भी बह रही हो क्या.
I am restless in this sea,
are you still flowing?

Jo guzaari na ja saki humse,
Humne wo zindagi guzaari hai.
जो गुज़ारी न जा सकी हमसे,
हमने वो ज़िन्दगी गुजारी है.
We have lived the life that we could not live.

Ye mujhe chaen kyun nahi parta,
Ek hi shaks tha jahan mein kya.
ये मुझे चैन क्यों नहीं परता,
एक ही शख्स था जहाँ में क्या.
Why doesn’t this bother me,
there was only one person in the world.

Main bhi bohot ajeeb hun, Itna ajeeb ki bas,
Khud ko tabaah kar lia or malaal bhi nahin.
मैं भी बोहोत अजीब हुन, इतना अजीब की बस,
खुद को तबाह कर लिए और मलाल भी नहीं.
I am also very strange, so strange that
I have destroyed myself and have no regrets.

Sab daleelein toh mujhko yaad rahin,
Behes kya thi usiko bhul gaya.
सब दलीलें तोह मुझको याद रहीं,
बेहेस क्या थी उसको भूल गया.
I remembered all the arguments,
forgot what was the argument.

Bohot nazdeek aati ja rahi ho,
Bichhadne ka irada kar lia hai kya.
बोहोत नज़दीक आती जा रही हो,
बिछड़ने का इरादा कर लिए है क्या.

Mujhe ab tumse darr lagne laga hai,
Tumhe mujhse mohabbat ho gayi kya
मुझे अब तुमसे डर लगने लगा है,
तुम्हे मुझसे मोहब्बत हो गयी क्या
I am scared of you now,
have you fallen in love with me?

Kaun iss ghar ki dekhbhaal kare,
Roz ik cheez toot jati hai.
कौन इस घर की देखभाल करे,
रोज़ इक चीज़ टूट जाती है.
Who will take care of this house,
everyday one thing breaks.

Kaise kahein ki tujh ko bhi humse hai vasta koi,
Tu ne toh aaj tak humse koi gila hi nahin kia.
कैसे कहें की तुझ को भी हमसे है वास्ता कोई,
तू ने तोह आज तक हमसे कोई गिला ही नहीं किआ.
How to say that you also have any concern with us,
you have not even complained to us till date.

Kisliye dekhti ho aaina,
Tum toh khud se bhi khoobsurat ho.
किसलिए देखती हो आईना,
तुम तोह खुद से भी खूबसूरत हो.
Why do you look at the mirror,
you are more beautiful than yourself.

Zindagi kis tarah basar hogi,
Dil nahi lag raha mohabbat mein.
ज़िन्दगी किस तरह बसर होगी,
दिल नहीं लग रहा मोहब्बत में.
